Personal Documentary

This is a personal documentary I created at the beginning of starting this semester.

I really enjoyed doing this project as I had done one with a similar brief before at sixth form so I had a few ideas from that anyway, and I knew that I wanted to focus it on a specific part of my life rather than lots of different parts.
Therefore, I chose to focus my 2 minute personal documentary on the impact music has had on my life.

I filmed it on my Canon 550D DSLR, and recorded myself for the voice over on a sound recorder.

I created the script myself before shooting, but left gaps so that I could improvise whilst recording so that it felt more personal.

I filmed in multiple locations (my house, my flat, in a car) and I filmed objects relating to the theme (vinyl, concert tickets, CD's, posters) to match the voice over so that the audio and visuals linked.

I am really pleased with how this turned out and I think that my background in photography influenced it and is noticeable throughout the piece. I like the way I used a mixture of handheld and tripod shots because I think this makes it look professional but also personal, which was my aim.

When planning my documentary I knew that I wanted to use a piano piece for the soundtrack, and I chose the song Near to You by A Fine Frenzy because I thought this would fit with the voice over, and so I asked someone I know to cover the piece. The cover was very different to the original song but I think it works very well with the film and so I am really happy with the results.
